Protection of standby equipment
by ratio starting

Definition of the problem

Unfortunately we do not live in a perfect world and equipment does fail. When a pump fails, it often means overflows and damage to local land and properties. In order to avoid this possibility it is now common practice to install spare equipment that can be used in the event of an equipment failure.

However in many cases, it is also standard practice to “balance” the running hours between both pumps. This means that both pumps are in a similar condition and consequently often fail at the same time.

Many suppliers of panels and pumping station control equipment are not experienced in the operation of network pumping stations. They frequently only tend to look for the simplest solution for themselves when it comes to managing the starting of pumps in a pumping station and therefore opt for alternative starting.

The ABS Solution

ABS is not just looking for the simple solution but instead we focus on offering efficient reliable solutions that are based on real life experience in the operation of network pumping stations. ABS Pump Controllers include standard functionality that allows you to manage the running hours between each pump.

This functionality is based on ratio starting that allows you to decide the ratio of running hours between each pump. What does this mean for you? Simply: By selecting the correct balance between the duty and standby pumps you can be sure that when the duty pump fails, the standby pump will still be in good condition. The standby pump can then maintain the required capacity of the pumping station while the failed pump is returned to your local ABS Service Centre for repair.

At ABS we focus on complete solutions and ratio starting is just one step when considering the start management of network pumping stations. We understand that due to the high solids content in wastewater applications, sedimentation and build-up of solids in non-running pumps can often be a problem. Again ABS Pump controllers have additional functionality called “Jog Starting” that allows a pump to be operated for a very short period just to clear any sedimentation or solids build-up.

By using intelligent Pump Controllers, ABS can provide you with practical solutions to ensure trouble-free operation of your pumping station.
